Q&A: Maxine Peake

Maxine Peake, 36, was born and brought up in Bolton. She studied performing arts at Salford Tech and was awarded a scholarship to Rada. In 1998 she was cast in Victoria Wood's TV sitcom Dinnerladies, and went on to play Veronica in Shameless and Myra Hindley in See No Evil. Most recently she played the lead in BBC1's legal drama Silk. Her stage credits include The Cherry Orchard at the National Theatre and Miss Julie at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. She is currently in Loyalty at Hampstead Theatre until 13 August. She lives in Salford.

When were you happiest?
The mid- to late 80s, summers spent at Park End Farm in Atherton – ankle deep in horse manure and soaking wet from falls from badly constructed rope swings across streams.

What is your greatest fear?
Political apathy.

What is your earliest memory?
Losing the fancy-dress competition at our street's Jubliee party. It went to the local farmer's daughter who came as Bo Peep with a real lamb.

Which living person do you most admire, and why?
My grandad for having the courage always to be himself.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
Most recently, falling down the escalators at Warren Street. Twice.

What is your most treasured possession?
My friendships.

Where would you like to live?
In a converted railway carriage in north Norfolk.

What would your super power be?
Selfishly, at this moment I'd sell my nearest and dearest for a photographic memory.

Who would play you in the film of your life?
Peter Kay.

What makes you unhappy?
Misogyny and capitalism.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?
My feet – they're the stuff of nightmares.

What is your most unappealing habit?
Tweezering facial hair in public.

What is your favourite smell?
New shoes.

What is your favourite word?
"Double gusset" and "bell-end".

What would be your fancy dress costume of choice?
Rupert The Bear, and I'd win this time!

What is the worst thing anyone's said to you?
"I think I'm falling in love with you."

What is your guiltiest pleasure?Hoovering my collection of novelty seven-inch singles: Ernie The Fastest Milkman In The West is my No 1.

What do you owe your parents?
Independence.

To whom would you most like to say sorry, and why?
My mum, for not understanding.

What does love feel like?
I'm just in the process of finding out.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
"Salford is in Salford, not Manchester."

If you could go back in time, where would you go?
The early days of the Royal Court Theatre… with Lindsay Anderson.

When did you last cry?
Watching the Sonics last month.

How do you relax?
A good long bike ride.

What song would you like played at your funeral?
Puff The Magic Dragon. It runs in the family.

How would you like to be remembered?
Saucily.
